if i used an apple keyboard but not the wireless one [just one that goes into the usb] on my dell?

No reason it shouldn't, but the keyboard labels (Command vs Windows...) will be a challenge to get used to.

Save the hassles and buy a $10 Windows keyboard.

If the apple keyboard says it works on the windows operating system your running then yes. Look on the box or online for it's system requirements. Best way to know is to try it.
