Intranet is equal to Internet being designed and used only within a small group, likely be a LAN setup of some company or even organization.

In essence Intranet describes the software setup and LAN describes one possible hardware setup for computer networking of a group.

An "intranet" refers to a LAN, or collection of LAN's, that is used only within a company or organization. As opposed to the INTERnet.

"Intra" is latin for "on the inside".

"Inter" means "among, between".

If you have multiples computers on a network at home then it is a intranet too.
