I have a feeling we are legislating and regulating ourselves to paralisis. There are laws, rules and restrictions in ever increasing places. What do you think?

Appart from the government I meant ourselves as a society. I feel we are just putting to many rules in place. For instance, this might be a silly example but, in my condo comunity we got a letter complaining that kids aren't allowed to use chalk on the side way. I mean who does that affect if you clean it after you are done playing and little things like that. There's the mom who got kicked out of a plane because her 18 month old was saying "bye, bye plane" and the flight attendant just didn't want to hear it. The kid wasn't even screaming or anything. That just makes me feel like you have to be watching over your shoulder to make sure you are not transgresing any rule, law, regulation etc and I feel it's somewhat suffocating...

We're as free as our neighbor wants us to be. I do think we're heading down the path of legislating one another into boxes - people want to disallow anyone to think differently than them, and lobby for laws to curtail personal freedoms.
I agree. When you can't run a small business as you see fit - when people live in communities that mandate how high their grass should be and what color roof they're allowed to have (and think it's a good thing until they want to do something that doesn't suit the bylaws), when your hair and bodily fluids can be taken for random screening purposes and your medical and credit records are as transparent as glass - you know you're gonna be taking that slide down the slippery slope.
Then we have to pay for the maintenance and upkeep of all the regulations - and wonder where our tax dollars (federal, state, local, property and sales) went. Then we hire more people to point fingers at one another so we can all collectively moan about it.
We're free to support a bloated bureaucracy.

I agree we are an oppressed society and there are an abundance of Rules, Laws, Restrictions, and Grid Lock in the Government and Highways. There is a lot of room for improvement> Health Care, Living Wage, Class Warfare, Environment, Taxes, New Sources of Energy, Greed, Corruption,Price Gouging, Crime, Lack of Tolerance, Prejudice, Bigotry, Age Discrimination, Education, Infrastructure Deterioration, Abuse of Power, War, Lack of Civility, Housing, Jobs that pay a Living Wage, not a Minimum Wage, Congressional Gridlock, Cost of Living,*

It amuses me that people always answer these types of questions stating that they have "freedoms" that have been taken away by this "regime", but nobody ever gives an example of a freedom that they have actually lost. I remember for a short time I couldn't bring my tweezers on an airplane. Is that what they are talking about?

We are a free country, we are experiencing some over-regulating of our freedoms at this moment. After the regime change we can begin to restore the freedoms we sat by as they were taken away.

"No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he is vigilant in its preservation"

Living in fear is losing your freedom. Are you afraid of terrorists on a daily basis? 9/11 doesn't happen every day, but the media likes to keep the image fresh in your mind.

Free is interpreted and misinterpreted in so many different ways.
Example:
Some people think free means free of surveillance. Some people think free means free of fear, therefore requiring surveillance. Kind of contradictory, eh?
