When I went to school it was the norm from 1st to 12th grade. (1962-1974, South Carolina). You screw up, and you got paddled. Sometimes it just hurt like hell and sometimes it hurt like hell and left marks. It would get you thrown in jail today for assault or child abuse.

In the 3rd grade I got swatted with a wooden paddle w/ holes in front of the whole class. I forgot to take my homework home. That teacher was a bit**. If I knew then what I knew now she would have gone to jail. That was so uncalled for. That was like 1972 and abuse wasn't an issue then as it is now. Yes it hurt like hell and was humiliating too.

Yeah. I went to a private Christian school, and the worst whooping I got EVER was with a ping pong paddle for cussing like a sailor. I was 12.

I was spanked in the second grade (1961) for reading ahead of the class. It didn't deter me at all. I still read faster than normal and I'm now an editor for a publishing company. To this day I think it was an unfair punishment.

I've been told that when the paddle has holes, and is whacked on the bare backside, sometimes it can literally cause blisters. That does seem excessive, and I'd think unlikely in schools.

Yes in the first grade. Our teacher used to hit us with a bunch of wooden rulers taped together on our hands.

I got paddled in 5th grade for cussing and then lying about it. I got 3 swats from the female asst. principal. My butt was on fire! Thankfully, my parents felt I was punished enough.

I went to catholic school and the nuns, especially Sister Quenton, routinely beat my left hand with a ruler because I was a left-handed "devil child".
My parents, devout catholics, finally realized my torture wasn't worth the education and put me in public school in 6th grade..
(took them long enough!)
That's one of the MANY reasons I am no longer catholic.

Yeah, when I was in 1st grade. Was about foot and a half long, an inch thick and did have holes. Teacher called it "Big Buddy".

When I was in first grade (oh many many years ago!) I was constantly smacked with a ruler on my left hand to try to discourage me from using my left hand instead of my right. "Back in the day" it wasn't acceptable to write with your left hand. Needless to say I am still left-handed.
