Because its a Monday, and its when many people had a day's holiday - including bank staff because the banks were shut. It used to be that most shops and offices were also shut. Because the banks were shut, banking transactions had to be deferred to the next day.
Nowadays many shops and some banks do open, making the term out of date.

Because of the normal hours 9 - 5 with no time for accounting, they closed for one day and it called it a `bank holiday.` Later, when they cut the open hours to 9 - 4 and did their accounting from 4 - 5 p.m. the public insisted on retaining their `bank holiday and so the Bank Holiday still stands. And always will!
Simple really.

Isn't it because, the bank can have a rest for once?
So because the banks close, the shops close because people can't use the banks, so enevitably they'd make less sales etc because people can't visit the bank. Therefore it's a national holiday.
