I think it's a lovely theory, but it's still only a theory, and I find the Bible version of events fits with what I can see around me.

Charles Darwin said quite a lot of things about the theory of evolution. The Origin of Species is largely a catalogue of scientific evidence supporting the theory of evolution, which was, of course, not uniquely Charles Darwin's theory at all but one that had gathered a number of supporters by that time.

The evidence Darwin produces, based on his own observations on his five year voyage on the Beagle, is true. This has been confirmed by similar observations many times. This evidence support the theory of evolution by natural selection, and any scientific rebuttal would have to include an alternate theory that explains all of these observations.

There is some evidence that natural selection sometimes works in different ways. For example, the burgess shale demonstrates some peculiar evolutionary results that show that evolution can take unexpected paths if opportunity is sufficient and the pressure on populations to complete is not too strong. These sudden bursts of variation occurring in relatively short periods of time (only a few million years) lead some to question how natural selection operates. However, the central theory remains good and no better theory has as yet been proposed.

A famous Victorian story reports the reaction of an aristocratic lady to the primary heresy of her time:

"Let us hope that what Mr. Darwin says is not true; but, if it is true, let us hope that it will not become generally known."

Charles Darwin is to biology, what Issac Newton is to physics.

The Theory of Evolution is by far THE single most important insight into the nature of developing biological, technological and sociological systems, ever made.

One does not have to look very far back in the history book to realize even Religion evolves.

Jesus is the religious equivalent of punctuated equilibrium.

Evolution is a THEORY. Theories are not 'true' or 'false', they are rated on their usefulness. The theory of evolution has been VERY useful. It is now one of the basic components of our understanding of biology, and certainly of zoology.

Scientists argue over the details, which is how every scientific theory works. But there is no alternative theory to evolution that is scientific. The main alternative is religious doctrine. There's nothing wrong with religious doctrine in its place, but it makes a poor substitute for science.

Four hundred years ago the Catholic Church denied the new idea that the earth was not the center of the universe. We could have been having the same argument about that then as we are having about evolution now. Eventually the evidence mounted to the point where the church had to give it up. This will happen with evolution too.

Evolution is the divine made manifest through the unfolding of itself in matter. We are evolving as a human race, a planet, a universe right now. Some children are being born right now with evolved DNA. So what Charles Darwin said was the beginning in our new phase of understanding life on earth. But there is nothing he said that completely contradicts the existance of a supreme intelligent energy, just depends on how deeply you look at it.

Those who think that evolution is theory might ponder the fact that it is a theory in the same way that gravity is! Darwin was more in tune with reality than the theists, and don't forget that when he published it was at a time when heresy was very serious. He waited 20 years before publishing, hardly an impulse, would you say?

A lot of people don't realize that evolution and natural selection occur all the time. Example: a dog is born in the wild with no legs. He's okay while he's young and nursing but by the time he grows and needs to forage for food he can't He dies.

Two things just happened..... Evolution (the mutation of his genes cause a physical change) and natural selection (his siblings outlived him because of his disadvantage).

Most mutations are detrimental to an organism. The organism dies, along with the 'bad' gene. But if a mutation occurs, which is beneficial to the organism, and that organism can pass that 'super' gene on to its offspring then chances are the descendants of this organism will have a better chance of surviving over its cousins.

Charles Darwin claims that only the fittest survive. We see proof of this everyday.

Regarding evolution, it has been proven. The only reason it's hard to comprehend is because it deals with very large numbers -- billions of years. That, and our fossil record isn't nearly complete, but we have enough to observe some evolutionary trends.

To missewan: Mankind didn't evolve from monkeys; we evolved from a common ancestor. So have monkeys, and so has everything else living in this world, including plants. It's how biology works.

More specific please? Which statement of Charles Darwin is being claimed to be not true. I sure hope nobody made the mistake of answering this question before you elaborate. It seems to indicate a lot of prejudices.

Mr. Know-it-all: The Catholic Church already released the statement that nothing in the theory of evolution contradicts Catholic doctrine, so Catholics may believe it without committing breaches of their faith.

It explains natural phenomenon quite well. Since I can make the same observations and draw the same conclusions I think the theory is of value.

I take umbrage that some professing Christians speak for me. People who base their belief on the 'flatness of the Earth' or whether the 'universe revolves around the Earth' or any magical system have weak faith. They use their perverse views to form community. But when they see Jesus he may say "I know you, you are the fool." Let's hope so, better than he not know you!

Of course it is true! Scientist have since proven that all animals evolved (although Crocodiles and Aligators are much the same now as they were in pre-historic times). Darwin's theory wasn't 100% correct, however most of it was and certainly the basis that all life evolved over millions of years, and we all started off in the water evolving into land dwellers as land appeared, eventually splitting into the myriad of species that inhabit our earth today.

What else could you possibly believe? A fairy story about "God" making the earth in 7 days, including man? There is no scientific proof to uphold even a tiny part of that particular fable.
