the only people that were independent of energy were all of us that needed it. You may not recall the "No Gas today" signs, but I sure as hell do. I also remember the auto industry laying off people with even up to 30+ years seniority. I also remember odd/even fill ups. Those 20% home loans were a real hoot weren't they? Carter was a pathetic piece of crap President who screwed up everything he touched. We won't even go into his worthlessness as Commander in Chief and the Iran hostages.

I don't know whether or not you would class me as a 'real' neocon. I was in the military (stationed just south of SFO)when Carter was in. And garbage truck drivers were on strike. They were complaining they were underpaid. I was a married E-6 with fifteen years experience. My total takehome pay was 10K less than a starting driver. And my pay was frozen by Carter for TWO years when inflation was the highest.

The only reason Carter was for energy independance was there had just been the big jump in gas prices and the economy was in the tubes. He had to look like he was doing something. And energy independance was the cause du jour. You see today how much effect Carter's actions had. Can you say, not much, boys and girls?

Carter was a nice man but a crappy president.

I remember three things under Carter.

1. Boycotting of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, which did nothing to punish Russia for the grain embargo; all it did was screw over OUR young athletes who had trained all their lives for a chance to compete in the Olympics.

2. Interest rates so high that they drove up the price of everything else, and nobody could afford to finance a car or a house, so the real estate and auto markets about collapsed.

3. Liberalism in the White House is NEVER a good thing.

They hate Carter for the same reason they hate Clinton, because they were Democrats. I really believe the GOP has a committee of people who sit around a table all day and think up nasty things to say about Democrats, especially Democratic presidents, which are then repeated over and over in right-wing media.

Actually not just Carter but every president since him has made speeches recognizing the importance of energy independence and has had some kind of plan. But Carter is the only one who actually -did- something. Reagan canceled all Carter's programs because he said he wanted the -market- to decide.

Who would have believed that by the beginning of the 21st century Carter's popularity ratings would rise higher than Reagan's?

Energy is not even the half of it.The billions dollars in oil contracts are a big part of the neocons military/industry agenda.Jimmy Carter was,in many ways,a good president&who could foresee that what he was passionate about(The eco-system of our planet due to greenhouse gases)turn out to be so prophetic?

I don't think the dislike for Carter can be limited to just the conservatives. Plenty of liberals knew the guy was a complete "mush" as Commander in Chief.

HERE'S WHY THEY HATE HIM

Jimmy Carter started sanctions against the USSR.( over the Afganistan conflict) This caused great hardship with their economy. THEN he started sending covert funds to the Afganistan Freedom fighters. This caused great pain in USSR with families of USSR soldiers that were being sent home in body bags. A brilliant foriegn affairs policy that was quickly adopted by President Ron Reagan as soon as he got into office. Great dissent regarding this war was commonplace across the USSR, leading to the country's eventual dimise.
All of which, mistakenly, has been credited to Ronald Reagan.

Is that why libs stop us from drilling for oil in the US or developing oil refineries? You know, off the coast of Fla, and in Alaska. Or why Lib king Kennedy wants wind farms, but not near his compound as proposed, so he filed a law suit to prevent them from being built near him. Yeah, it's the conservatives holding it all up alright.

we disliked carter because of his bumbling policies that caused interest rates to soar, gas shortages, Americans to die and the country as a whole to slide even further to socialism, and i was a Democrat at the time!

--as a side note, Carter has only grown more despicable since then and shown his true socialist colors as well.
