I have a 28 day cycle. I have been temping about 3 months now, and I notice that although I get a positive opk on cycle day 16, (also on 17....) my temps don't rise until day 19. Does this mean that my lutela phase is only 9 days, or do I count from the day I got a + opk????
I don't know whether or not I should see a doctor for this. Some people have advised me to. Any experience with this??

Since your temp rises on day 19 then you most likely ovulate on CD 18. When you get a pos opk it doesn't mean that you are ovulating then, it means you will ovulate in the next 24-48 hours. So the pos opk on CD 16 and 17 indicates ovulation on CD 18. You say you have a 28 day cycle, that would make your LP 10 days, that is short.
You should either consult your OB/Gyn or RE or start using Natural Porgesterone Cream from 3 dpo til your period comes. But if you get a pos HPT, keep using it.

You have the same thing I do. Except I ovulate on day 15 of my 28 day cycle and my temps go up on day 18. There is nothing wrong with you, I think it's actually normal. You just have a two day period after you ovulate before your temp rise. I would count your luteal phase from the day after you get your first ovulation test though, since normally ovulation takes place 12-24 hours after you get the positive. So you ovulated on day 17 and you have a 12 day luteal phase. I guess if you try for a while and you can't get pregnant, then you should see a doctor and bring this stuff up. But other than that you sould be fine!

A luetal phase defect is when the luteal phase is less than 10 days. When this occurs it's very hard to conceive and a doctor can prescribe progesterone to lengthen the luteal phase. Your temps rise the day after ovulatrion, so you would count ovulation as the day before, day 18. This goes along with the OPK's, which tell you 24-48 hours before ovulation occurs. This gives you a 10 day luteal phase. This is not technically a defect, but you wany want to talk to your OB about it anyways, as they usually want them to be at least 12 days.

I believe you count from the day you ovulated and then count to the first day of your next period. Nine days is on the short side, I believe I read anything under 10 days is considered short and leads to difficulty with conception but it could be that maybe your OPK is showing the surge after you ovulate and you really have a 10 day cycle. I have a 10 day cycle (I used the clear plan fertility monitor so I was able to see my fertility level rise and then BAM, ovulation) and I got pregnant twice. Good luck!
