"Service Engine Soon" light on.
Diagnostic indicates air leak in both manifolds (V8).
Gas cap seems to be working properly.
If there is a separate diagnostic for the L and R manifolds there must be separate sensors, correct?
BMW 8 cyl. 75,000.
Seems impossible that both the L and R sprang a leak in the exact same week.
Mechanic recommends gasket replacement.
If result doesn't work, mechanic says replace manifold.

Sounds like your mechanic is guessing...he can't tell you whether replacing the gaskets will stop the leak?

Find another mechanic, one who will tell you the exact code the engine is showing. I'm betting you really just need a new oxygen sensor, based on the mileage on the car, and the mechanic you're talking to is about to take you for an expensive ride.

The mechanic is an incompetent moron and a crook who will replace parts at random as long as you give him money to. It's probably something the manifolds have in common, like a vacuum line. Go somewhere else.

Disconnect the battery cable for a few minutes and put it back on the post---see if the lite goes off...

I've used barsleak, but I don't think it's recommended for any LENGTHY repair.
