While an actor who is already working/getting work on a regular basis may find college courses to be a waste of time, many people interested in theater coming out of high school have not had enough classical training or stage work to make it out there. That being said, if you were to skip college and go for it gung-ho out of high school, you're limiting yourself by not getting a degree. If acting doesn't work out, then what?

UCLA offers many degrees through the School of Theater, Film & Television. The theater program has a variety of different tracts/concentrations, including general theater, acting, directing, and production. It's a really intensive program, about 5-8 hours a day, five days a week. You're also required to take GE (general education) courses throughout.

UCLA students put on a LOT of shows, but the underclassmen (Freshmen and Sophomores) end up doing a lot more book work than the upperclassmen. Additionally, UCLA has student groups that produce shows throughout the year. The best reason to go to college theater programs is to utilize the large resources available (rehearsal and performance space, in-the-know professors, peers your own age who won't patronize you). The worst reason to go to a college theater program is to get rich quick or find an easy way out.

Of course they do BUT they may not be the best choice. They are huge and you could get lost in the crowd. If you are an experienced actor and mature when you graduate hs, college may be a bad idea. To learn more, click on my name, read my profile and contact me at my aol address.
