There are three pairs of ear ossicles in the human body. They are the hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup, so named because of the shape of the bones.

There are three ossicles in the middle ear. There are in order from the tympanic membrane (eardrum) to the oval window of the inner ear, the malleus, incus, and stapes. These are found in both ears. The common names are the hammer, anvil, and stirrup. They transmit the vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the membrane of the oval window in the inner ear.
