Did you know that there is a new type of breast cancer that is called Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC)?? This is a type of breast cancer that's found without a lump, but the most classic symptoms are: rapid increase in breast size, reddness, skin hot to the touch, persistant itching, and thickening of breast tissue. If you have any of these symptoms PLEASE visit your doctor immediately! Most physicians have never had a patient with this type of cancer, but I was just e-mailed a video clip about 5 women who had it and were told that it was probably a mosquito bite. One girl was 16 and had it and she died. She was too embarrassed to tell her mom that her breast looked "funny". If any of you would like to see that clip, please let me know and I will e-mail it to you. Women everywhere need to be alerted to this info.

Anyone know anything else about this cancer?

This is very serious. Most cancer centers have never even heard of it.

It's not new, and most cancer centers are very well-prepared to diagnose and treat it. The primary problem is that women ignore it because the symptoms mimic other, benign, conditions. (It can also be trickier to get a primary care provider to make a referral than it would be with a palpable or visible lump.)

It seems new because it is getting a good deal of attention lately, primarily due to circulating emails.

It is a very aggressive cancer, so all the attention it receives is a very good thing.

It's always a good idea to keep the seven warning signs of (all types of) cancer tucked in the back of your mind. They are:

Change in bowel or bladder habits
***Sore that does not heal ****
Unusual bleeding or discharge from any place
****Lump or thickening of any part of the body****
Chronic indigestion or difficulty in swallowing
Changes in a wart or mole
Persistent coughing or hoarseness

Two of these (sore that does not heal, and thickening of tissue) are present in IBC, and should lead any woman to the doctor. Sadly, this often is not the case. So thank for raising awareness.

Geez. As if our breasts didn't give us enough trouble, we get to have yet another thing to worry about? I swear, sometime I am just so tempted to have my breasts and all reproductive organs removed just so I have less to worry about.

Man. What a bummer.
