Look for unified auditions in the cities near where you live - small theaters - there are web sites such as:
www.atlantaperforms.com/unifieds/unified_faq2007
www.nctc.org/nctcevents/unifiedauditions/index.shtml
www.acotonline.org/Pages/txauditions.html
www.stagesource.org/pages/4728_tips_for_general_unified_auditions.cfm
be prepared with two monologues - one funny and one dramatic as well as two songs if you sing - bring the lyrics
also, if you try out for a specific part, dress and act the part so the casting director can see how serious you are and can picture you in the role.
good luck,
mike

First you have to know how to act, attend a good acting school. Take part in plays to get a resume going and make sure you put effort into it. Attend any open audition calls in your city, it does not have to be LA or NY, movies are made all over the country and they often need extras or walk ons. Learn from those more experienced than you are and be willing to take direction (use common sense though). Most cities of any size have theatre companies and some of the performers there have acted in movies, maybe you can be one.
You have what it takes to be famous? Are talking real fame or the "Paris Hilton" type where you are famous for being famous? It takes hard work to be an "overnight" success and the willingness to keep on trying.

The Lana Turner story was apocryphal. I'm sorry I forgot this is yahoo answers. I mean some big poo poo head told a nasty fib. She was under contract and some PR man made it up. Look at the answers to the question directly above yours. And you have what it takes? Do you KNOW what it takes? A marketable look, charm, charisma, talent, training, skill, parents who are 100% behind you and you also need to live in NY or LA. You need ALL of that before you can even join the thousands who are trying and will never get there. Just be a kid and don't have delusions of grandeur.

Do you have your parent's support for your dream? Do you realize famous people have no privacy and cannot go to the mall or the grocery? That they need bodyguards? Think it over. Being famous is not much fun.

You can't be an actress for the sake of being famous! Are you absoloutly insane? To be an actress or model, you shouldn't even care about being famous, you just have to want to do what you love! Nobody real is going to take you in if you just want to be FAMOUS! If you want to be famous, commit suicide in the middle of the mall...

Helene, I looked up Schwab's Drugstore.
Very interesting history. Unfortunately, it was closed and torn down in the 80's. It should've been designated a historical landmark and preserved in my opinion. I live in L.A. and have however been to its location several times (which is now a Virgin Megastore, shopping complex, with food courts and movie theaters).
