The world is round, so why do we (still) talk about people from 'every corner of the world/globe/planet'?

A round world cannot have corners as such.

People didn't always know the world was a sphere. For centuries people though it was flat. I imagine if came from that belief

If the world did have corners, that is where people would come from.

I suppose because it rolls off the tongue better than "every fixed point on the surface of this semi-spherical orb" does.
