A demonstration has been held in south- east Afghanistan accusing US troops of insulting Islam after they distributed footballs bearing the name of Allah.

The balls showed the Saudi Arabian flag which features the Koranic declaration of faith.

The US military said the idea had been to give something for Afghan children to enjoy and they did not realise it would cause offence.

The footballs were dropped from a helicopter in Khost province.

Some displayed flags from countries all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, which features the shahada, one of the five pillars of Islam - the declaration of faith.

Who EXACTLY is this "islam" that keeps getting insulted?
It's not a person...
It's not a formal group (since "they" keep saying you can't lump all terrorists with all muslims)...
It's not a hierarchy, since there is no "leader" of islam...

But somehow - whenever ANYTHING happens - "islam" is insulted.

Maybe "islam" would be better perceived if "islam" were more insulted by the mass murderers using its name as justification, than by getting insulted over some footballs.

You know, how miserable it must be to have a faith that keeps you in such bondage. Now, I'm not wanting to slam Muslims. I just don't understand how certain groups can get offended at anything and everything. It's almost like they try to find reasons to protest yet don't protest about the violence, hatred, and murder within their own religion. Between beheading innocent civilians to honor killings of innocent women that are victims of crime to threatening to kill someone over a cartoon.

Did you hear about the Opus cartoon that the newspapers wouldn't run. They ran the one making fun of Falwell but not the one that poked fun at Radical Islam. So here we are attacking Christians and pandering to Islam. Only to strengthen them...same as in the war against terror. Wishing and hoping for defeat and pandering to the terrorists. It's such a sad time for our nation.

They take religion very seriously over there.

Have you ever seen a football over here with Jesus or God's name on it? I wouldn't be too crazy over it myself.

Do our footballs have other countries flags on it?

Even our own flag?

I don't understand the reasoning behind it. They could have just dropped plain footballs. Seems they went through an awful lot of trouble.

You can't win the hearts and minds of ignorantly emotional people.

That is my reaction.

We see an innocent brown football made in China, they see a symbol of America seeking to castrate the minds of the Islamic youth by putting the name of Allah on the ball.

How about instead of footballs, we drop more frickin bombs you frickin lemmings! Would that be more understandable?!

Dang!

Saudi Arabian footballs? Al Qaida hockey sticks? Same thing.

I would be appalled too.

The Saudis are the radicals. How stupid is our government?

Well let me see. If atheists dropped footballs from the sky, would it piss me off since I am a Christian? No. Would it piss the atheists off dropping Christian footballs from the sky? I am sure the ACLU would be called immediately. Frankly, if it was done without malice, who the hell cares? I am sure the children don't.

I think giving anyone anything faith-related is just a bad idea.

Why can't we have given them regular footballs? Were our tax dollars really going towards footballs with flags on them?

It is sacrelige of the worst order. Football is an American sport and should only bear the name of American chain stores, or the Asian countries they are manufactured in.

Like real American things (hee hee hee).
Thanks

Well it was apparently an innocent mistake. No big deal. Take the footballs away, apologize and get on with it.
