Greece tryed very hard to proove that we don't have any terrorists any more. Our country has much less criminality than big organised countries, even in holiday resorts. Athens is of course not a safe place, but it is a 5 million city. Living 20 years in Thessaloniki, nothing happen to me, noone stole my bag in the bus or smth like that.
I have visited other countries and I can say that Greece is a safe place.
About the fires: I don't really know if it is something that is going to happen again. Do you thing that USA is an unsafe place because of the disaster of 11 September or because of the hurrocanes (Catrina, Nino etc)?

Stay in Athens for 3 days to se the monuments and museums, and then off to some islands, like Paros, Sifnos, Syros, Myconos or Santorini. The best time would be in July and late August. Mid August is rather crowded.

Go to athens and stay @ the intercontinental.

If you're going to Thessaloniki, stay at the Hyatt--across from the largest casino in Europe.

Head over to Chalkidiki for a day--it's where a lot of Europeans spend their holiday.

THEN go to the islands--santorini--is gorgeous, mykonos is a big party time with swimming pools in night clubs.

Rhodes, and Corfu are also worth seeing.

The only reason why I say to go to the mainland first is because--A.--you should see how the "real greeks" live, and B. If you head over to the islands first, you'll never want to leave.
