good is in the eye of the beholder. some of my favorite movies are horrible movies but fun.
for my official answer though, when i put down a great book, i do 1 of 4 things 1. cant breath. 2. rush to find anything else by that author, 3. cry 4. slam the book down and stomp around for a while then say damn that was a good book but im never reading that author again lol

1. Plot- does it move along quickly or slowly.
2. Setting- an interesting setting makes for a very good read. The book should have a lot of descriptive passages to get the reader in the 'mood.'
3. Character- the characters in the book should undergo changes throughout the book. I like those where the changes are gradual rather than abrupt.
4. Misc.- I like books that keep the reader interested and reading. Books you can't put down, or are anxious to get back to the book to find out what happens next.

i think one qualification is timelessness, if it works as good now as the day it was written; if folks can still relate to it, or even if it's just still popular, for whatever reason.
