I am behind on one payment, the next thing you know my mother, one of my references for the loan, called and said to give thme a call. I was very upset b/c I was really trying to make arrangements. I let the manager know that I really did not appreciate it and end the conversation. He later called back and left a detailed message on my voicemail stating that he will continue to 'harrass' my references as long as he wants to. I found that unbelievable and I am certainly appauled. What are my rights? Is that type of treat legal?

Harassment is illegal whether it is from a single person or a company. The problem with telephone harassment is that it is difficult to prove and can take a while to end. First, make sure that you document every time they call you and/or your family. Each time a call is received you must also tell them not to contact you via the phone again.
You should also contact the supervisor and let them know that you have been threatened by one of their employees, and that if the situation is not taken care of then you will take legal action.
I hope you kept a copy of the voice mail that you received. With that proof, along with all documentation you have been keeping, you can contact your state's Attorney General and let him know of the situation. I don't know what state you live in, but here in Connecticut the Attorney General takes this sort of thing very seriously and will contact the company himself to resolve the situation.
Besides all that, just try to pay off the loan ASAP so you don't have to deal with them anymore. Good luck.

Yes it is. You made an agreement and have not kept it. But you should have met with the loan service as soon as you knew you were going to have a problem. It isn't too late though. Schedule a meeting. They will want to know when you will make up the missed payment. Perhaps you can refi the note (not likely if you have only made a few payments) to put you back on schedule. Yes, that will cost you some money, but it will help restore your credit rating.

Edit:

For those who are voting this as a bad answer, consider this:
It is true, I did it when I worked for a finance company. It isn't what I personally endorse, which is one reason I left the finance business and I don't condone it. But, the loan officer can call anyone he wants to. I don't agree with it and believe it should not be allowed.

They are trying to collect a debt from you. They have no right to harrass your references. You may need to get an attorney to stop it. Easier to pay the debt.

They can't harrass you or your family. Contact their supervisor and if it doesn't stop it contact a lawyer.
