Hi Tommy. This sounds almost certainly a fuel problem. Try service exchange injectors, if this doesn't solve the problem then an injection pump (again service exchange) is the answer. You may be able to get your own units recond. but shop around locally to find the best deal. If you do have to change the pump, this will mean setting the spill timing. Get hold of a workshop manual. Best of luck.

It;s a diesel, isn't it? Black smoke is caused by unburnt fuel, you have either an injector going on the blink or the injector pump playing up. What is happening is that the cylinder in question isn't firing properly, hence the loss of power and excess smoke.

Black smoke is to much fuel.
White smoke that lingers is oil burning.
White smoke that dissipates is water vapor.
Its most likely a stuck choke on a carburetor or enrichment injector leaking if you have fuel injection.
Its a fuel problem.

Check your oil level.
Lister engines have an inherent fault with the injector olives. They leak into the cylinders, which could account for the smoking, but also, the sump fills with diesel.

Could be any of the answers below, but before going to any extreme measures check that your governor is free and not sticking occasionally. If it is a bit sticky or catching on something this would produce the problem you are experiencing.

black smoke indicates either oil burning or too rich of a gas mixture
could be one of many things first place to start get a tuneup and make sure the timing is'nt off
check valve lash
do a compression leak down test you can tell the condition of the rings, valves , heads with it
