Ugh. 92 volvo. Hesitant starting, so I had battery checked. It was fine. So I replaced the alternator. Seemed to fix the starting problem for a week. Now its back to hesitating when i crank it up. The lights go dim and stay dim. The gas gauge is bouncing around. What could it be?

The starter motor gets its own power from the battery in large cables, but what tells the starter to start comes from the same power that you run the instruments, lights, cig lighter in smaller wires and ground straps. usually theres a bare heavy cable thing coming off the engine to the car and that goes bad sometimes. the wire coming off the (-) side of the battery to the frame of the car can become corroded or shorted out. use a battery jumper cable from the (-) side of the battery to the firewall area (between motor compartment and passenger area) and simulate a good ground, if it improves you will then know why.

Sounds like a ground problem. check the battery cables very closely. especially at both terminal ends
