I asked this once before, and got a few good answers. But I just couldn't bring myself to call her, and wound up procrastinating until I accidently let the question expire. I'd like to give the people who gave me such good advice another chance at the points - this time I promise I'll pick a best answer whether I get up the guts to call or not. Here are some details for everyone else:
I bought a cellphone recently from a place that buys, sells, and repairs cellphones. and after I took it home, I realized that it still had some videos in it. I watched them, and one of the videos shows the owner of the phone being proposed to. Her Mom's phone number is still programmed into the phone. I feel torn - should I try to send her the video? It's possible the phone was stolen, and sold to the store I bought it from (that didn't occur to me until my husband brought it up). I feel weird calling someone's Mom out of the blue -- but I would want this video clip if it was mine....

My phone, my wallet, everything was stolen from me a month ago. I didn't have anything on my phone like that, but I had pictures of my dad who died ten years ago in my wallet. I don't care about the phone, the credit cards, or any of that crap. All that was replaced within 48 hours. My phone, less than 24, AT&T overnighted me a replacement immediately. The pictures of my dad can NEVER be replaced. Just like that video. Yes you should contact them. Trust me, they don't care about the phone, in fact they probably got a better one than the one that was lost. I would defintely do this.

You seem to have a conscience that is guiding you in the right direction. It's not weird to just call and ask. If the phone turns out to be stolen, then go back to the store you bought it from with the person who first owned it and make them give you a replacement.

I believe you should call her and let her know and give her the chance to decide what she would like to do.
I had a cell phone and was receiving 20 plus blocked prank calls daily and when my contract expired with Verizon, I cancelled the phone. Out of curiosity, I called my old number a month later and a girl answered. I explained why I cancelled my contract with them and explained about my hundreds of prank calls to the phone number she had. She appreciated it because she was getting the calls and thought it was someone she knew pulling a prank.
I just think the old phone owner may appreciate it.

She may really appreciate it.I would!
But,Im shocked when some people try to contact people they dont know they sometimes at as though you are the plague even though you are trying to do something nice.Maybe they are afraid because of scammers not sure.
I would call mom and explain and tell her you just bought it and wanted to send it before you deleted it.
Because it loked so important!

you are right it is a once in a lifetime event; you should call; I am sure that she will want you to send it to her ; very thoughtful; I called someone's Mom in the phone list when I found her daughter's pocketbook at Starbucks outside; she came right down to get it and couldn't thank me enough; no good deed goes unnoticed ; what goes around comes around; it is an act of kindness

You should call. She would probably want that video. If it is stolen property, then the store where you bought it from would be in trouble, not you. They should check all merchandise they receive before selling it.

just call and tell them where you got the phone and whats on it. and ask them if they would like for you to send it to them.
all they can say is no. don't worry about. i would do it.
