Why do you need them for a laptop purchase? Get it, and drop a router on the inside of your modem to connect the laptop with wired or wireless.

Heya dude, ummm ive read your question and dont fully understand the question. However as a laptop and internet user i thought i could help you out. My laptop is around 5 years old or so, and it is wireless, all i have to do is hook the wireless box upto the plug in the way and it transmits the signal. Then fire up the laptop and itll find it the network and hey presto internet. Never really had any connection problems. i also use my laptop in many places and leach others net whether it is starbucks or watever. These days its very simple to set a computer up to the internet. About as hard as it is to set up a nintendo ds to the net, ie a kid can manage it. as long as your internet is not like password protected and you dont know the password you shouldnt have to much trouble. I also sometimes connect my laptop to the wall using the phone like port and it loves it.

Im not to sure what you are worrying about.

I know you are enjoying the 'free' DSL but you can bet sure as the sun comes up that at some point someone will come knocking (or billing) as the case may be. If you really want to try to find out who your carrier is you can try these steps and they may help pinpoint them for you. What you do then is on you.

1. Click on Start and then Click on Run.
2. Type in the command cmd and then click OK.
3. When the command dos window opens up, click on the maximize button to expand it.
4. Type this command and hit Enter: tracert www.yahoo.com
5. This will start a process that will trace the physical route on the internet between your pc and Yahoo.com. One of the first two to four lines should post the trunk line address of the carrier that is carrying your packet and that will be your DSL provider. For example, when I entered this command, on line 3 and 4, I got this result:
------------------------------------------------
3 25 ms 25 ms 24 ms P12-1.LCR-01.PITBPA.verizon-gni.net [130
]
4 37 ms 173 ms 31 ms so-7-0-0-0.ASH-PEER-RTR2.verizon-gni.net
-------------------------------------------------
The key words here are Verizon.gni.net - My DSL carrier is Verizon.net . Hopefully your result will show you your carrier also. Pay now or really pay later ................Sorry dude, that's just the way it is.

You will need to get a router. You would unplug the network cable that currently goes into your PC and plug that into the "upload" jack on the router (it will be marker). The router will have 4 or more ports that you can run a cable from one of those ports to your old computer, and another one to your new laptop. Both computers will be able to use the one connection and do not have to talk to the ISP at all.

If your new laptop includes a wireless card, then be sure that the router you purchase also has wireless in it. (Will cost you about $10 more). Then instead of having to have a cable run to your laptop, you can connect it to the router wirelessly.

You have a choice between managing without the laptop so you continue getting free broadband and phone or you get the laptop and risk being charged for the entire period since your last bill when you try getting it set up. I don't know your location but if you are in UK and were formerly with ntl, you are now with Virgin Media and if you were formerly with Wanadoo you are now with Orange

This may not be ethical, but keep it hush hush, don't call them up again, don't mention it to them, to set up internet on the laptop is a piece of cake. Laptops usually come pre-bundled with Windows and the drivers for each of the devices, first try just plugging in the cable and try to surf, if that does not work, you need to install your ethernet port drivers, (found in device manager in control panel) from there, you can find the port, install the drivers, usually that comes with the cd they give you, if not, you can search the web (from your pc of course) for it, install and go.

you dont need to know your provider to set up your laptop, unless you want ISP email.
Get a wireless router and a wireless laptop and the router will find the gateway and DNS
If you need email, use Hotmail or yahoo or gmail and dont worry about the ISP email.

SSHHH!
If you have wifi on your pc, buy a laptop with wifi and run network set up wizard, or by a router.
