It is possible to make money with llamas and/or alpacas but it does require some start-up money and a lot of work and time. There is a huge price range for either of them, and in order to make money you need to buy the best breeding stock that you can afford, and be willing to spend time training, grooming, and possibly even attending shows in order to get your name out there and prove that you are producing the quality that people will want to buy. Research things like fiber quality, bloodlines, conformation, etc. Be aware that they really shouldn't be bred before age 2, and they are pregnant for close to a year, so it can be a long time before you see a turn around on your investment if you start out with young stock.
If you are looking to get rich in a hurry, the llamas & alpacas probably aren't your best choice, but if you are looking for an enjoyable & rewarding way to make a profit and you have some money to invest in getting good quality breeding stock, then you may want to look into it further.
I chose llamas because of their versatility. Alpacas are mainly used for fiber and showing. Llamas can be raised for many different purposes including fiber, showing, packing, livestock guardian animals, companion animals, and also their dung is prized by gardeners. They are easy to train and fun to work with.
