I have used both and both do well if washed per instructions. It all depends on what you are trying to put on the shirt - the intricacy of the design, etc.

Fabric paint will crack over time as it is thicker and heavier. I have used iron on transfer paper for designs hand drawn by my nephews and then copied them from a colour printer onto the paper. These were done about 2 years ago and have still not cracked.

On the other hand, I have used fabric paint to seal iron on fabric designs and these have not given me any difficulty either.

If the design is too intricate, some of the fabric paint might run together whereas using iron on paper would not. However, using iron on paper would not give you the texture you might be looking for in the design.

Do a test run using both and see which one you like the look and feel of better. That is the best way to see what you want to use. I personally have not had any problems with fading or coming off in the wash with either medium.

Both will hold up in washings. I like fabric paint
myself. I also mix fabric medium with acrylic paint
so I have more color choices.

They both do well, but you have to be careful. Use gentle soap and a gentle cycle. Turn the item inside out. Don't use the dryer.
