Actually, if you're an expat, you won't be paying taxes, EPF or even SOCSO. So, you will get most, if not all of that USD 2500.00 . Thats pretty good money, but your biggest expenditure will be for your rental, and transportation. If you've kids, your kids education will become an issue, especially if you want to place them in an International School.
I don't think you are from the US, as USD 2500 is too little for an overseas assignment. You should be able to live quite well here for that amount of money. There will be some adjusting that you need to do, but thats pretty much like anywhere else in the world. And trust me, theres a lot of other places where you can do much worst.

Considering a new Proton Wira car cost USD12000 and a decent bowl of beef noodle cost the most at USD1.50, I would say, yes, that is more than enough. It won't be enough to live like a king or queen but it is enough for decent living, rent, food, transport, clothings.

If you are single, USD2,500 is just enough for you to have a decent kind of living.
After deduction of
(i) tax (25-27%) and ,
(ii) the employees' provident fund (about 10%),
(iii) your disposable income is around USD1,600 = RM5,600.
If you are in US, don't come down here, stay there.
1. The Purchasing Power in PJ or M'sia is lower compared to US or S'pore.
2. Your income will fall into a higher Tax bracket in Msia.
3. Consumer goods prices are higher. (Especially iImported groceries, food, fast food, sports gear, gym membership, etc)
4. Transportation/car prices are higher.
5. Again, if you are single, just okay, but if you have a family of 3, (say like having a baby & a maid like us) that income alone will surely make you tighten your belt and calculative on spending.

I agree totally with Trustee... Its so expensive here you cannot afford a decent living. Stay back in the US. Malaysia is not a nice place to live.

USD2,500 x 3.5 = RM8,750.00 (Tax free)
USD2.500 x 0.72 (28% Income Tax) x 3.5 = RM6,300.00
If you are single, it is more then enough.
Apartment/Condo = 800 - 1,500.00
Car = 1,000.00
Food = 1,500.00
