They are checked and most renters are not perfect. They are looking more for evictions and charge offs, not your score.

As a renter for seventeen years, my experience has been that professionally managed, large apartment complexes with property managers, rental or leasing agents, and on site rental offices conduct credit report checks through at least (2) of the top (3) credit reporting agencies. I don't believe privately owned residences where I rented an apartment attached to the property did a credit report check. These "private" renters would probably only run a check if they were renting the property through a management or real estate company.

I would think there's a range in which you would have to fall to be considered a reasonable risk, and I believe there is only about 10-15 % (and I think that's high) of the US population that falls within the excellent or highest credit rating range. You could do an internet search on that statistic.

Remember that every inquiry that's made has some slight effect on your number, but I'm not exactly sure what it is. It lowers the score.

Well, I tried to help....Short answer...Unless you are in the "poor" range I wouldn't count yourself out and worry to the point of not trying.

Yes and No.

It varies greatly from landlord to landlord and complex to complex.

In general, the larger complexes are beurocratic and have set rules they follow. So they be more likely to have credit requirements they have to follow. Smaller complexes, and private landlords are much less strict. Some dont even check credit at all. Some many check credit and just require a larger deposit. There are many different scenarios that can happen.

But in general I think credit scores are very overrated when in it comes to renting. I know people with horrific credit that hav rented with ease.
