What is the evolutionary advantage of the morning erection?

Could it be that a male who could reproduce quickly while the female was still sleeping and this less able to reject his advances might have better reproductive chances? Or could it be that the rested body having had time to produce sperm was fitter for reproduction? Any other theories?

Primitive humans were once very chimp-like. An early morning erection would have been an outstanding way for a low-ranking male to take quick advantage with a female, before the dominant male was awake.

It was also an outstanding way for the dominant male to show off his physical power and dominance over the others of the group.

The dominant males would have had first choice, and most frequent access to the females. Waking up with an erection would have shown his virile strength, and overall health to the females. It would have also been a sort of threat to the lower ranking males.

I'm not sure how it's an evolutionary advantage to have the longest and most powerful erections when we're dead asleep. Are we supposed to copulate when we are asleep? I think it's the female that's supposed to surreptitiously mount the man when he's asleep while his erection stands ready to truly deliver at peak performance.

What do doctors have to say why we have morning erections? "Relaxed state", "REM sleep", "bladder pressure", "elevated blood NO levels", "elevated testosterone levels", etc. In other words, they don't really know why we should have morning erections.

Addendum: As for the theory that we get erections from wanting to hold our pee, judges on the bench should be getting massive erections. I don't think so.

In most cases, I think the erection is more about needing a pee! The full bladder causes the brain to focus on that need and ready the bladder for evacuation. The penis gets ready too, hoping for some action from the excitement.

Many women become sleepy after sex. This is because they are more likely to become pregnant if they remain in the whorizontal position afterword's. In the morning a woman's body is well rested and ready to be impregnated. She is likely to continue resting after that to increase the likelihood of pregnancy.
