females only carry 2 X chromosomes. it's the male that has both X and Y. so when your baby gets one chromosome from the mother and one from the father, it's the father's sperm that decides what gender the baby is.

Women carry the X chromosome in the egg...sex of the baby is determined by the sperm as it carries either an X or a Y chromosome. If an X fertilizes the egg its a girl and if its a Y its a Boy.

It is determined by the sperm cell involved in the conception.

The sperm cell carries either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome (remember that dad is male, so he has XY).

The ovum (egg cell) always carries an X chromosome (mom is XX).

So if the sperm cell carries an X chromosome, the resulting embryo is XX, and will develop into a girl. If the sperm cell carries a Y chromosome, the resulting embryo is XY, and will develop into a boy.
