I have a large plastic pool outside. Put the baskets in it with about 6 inches of water. Plants suck up the water from the bottom. Any container that holds water will so.

go to a garden center and ask for some HYDROGEL. It's a polymer that absorbs water and releases it slowly. It's best to incorporate this into your soil, but at this point, I'm sure that's not an option.

I'd suggest putting a ring of it around the outside edge of the container, directly on top of the soil. Water your baskets in well before putting the hydrogel in them. Then water again to hydrate the gel. This will hopefully help the plants stay moist while you're gone.

(hydrogel is what they put in disposable diapers to absorb the liquid)

This only works if you've got a garden tap.
Go to the garden centre and get an automatic hose timer, a length of dribble hose and a large gravel tray. (Don't worry, you'll find other uses for them later). Take down the baskets and put them in the tray near your garden tap. Arrange the dribble hose around the baskets and set up the timer to water them twice a day.

I water them really well then put them in a shady spot. For a week they should be ok.
I once asked my brother who was looking after the cat to water ours and he forgot and they died (the hanging baskets not the cat), so i'm with you on not getting a neighbour to do it lol

Prop up a 2 liter soft drink bottle with a very, very, small hole in the lid filled with water, with the lid in the soil that should be sufficient for a week. don't cut off the base, as capillary action will draw enough to keep them going, if you cut off the base the water won't last two days.

Cut the bottom off a soft drinks bottle, push the drinking end in to your basket so it is upright, fill with water, the water should then drain slowly into the basket.

Hope this helps, enjoy your hols x

If they have drain holes in the bottom of the container or they are in porous containers like coconut shells put them in a plastic garbage can lid filled with water in the shade. The plants will pull water in through their root systems if the soil remains moist.

Best to take them down and keep them somewhere sheltered from the sun.

Or you can buy an automatic watering system which would solve the problem.

my grandmother use to put water next the the plant and put a piece of cotton clothes line like a straw from the soil about 1 inch deep to the water and the plants would drink like a straw when they got thirsty.

It depends on how many you have, but you can fill your bathtub with a few inches (or less) of water and put the plants in there. If they don't all fit, you can put individual dishes under each plant and fill those with water too. Good Luck, I hope this helps!
