The delta is bright as is a line that follows the river, but nothing else around it. What is the reason for this? Are there cities that line the river for hundreds of miles?

Because the Nile River runs through an extremely arid, unpopulated, and undeveloped part of Africa. Populations do not thrive too far away from the Water Source, so there are no people to turn on lights. Plus, many of the communities do not have electricity.

Probably about 95% of egypts populationlives along either the nile river basin or along the sea coast. The remaining 5% are nomads that live in the desert without electricity.

in that part of the world, the nile river is the source of life. cities lie right on its banks because it provides food, transportation and most importantly water. why would people life in inner egypt when the nile provides such abundant resources?

Probablythe moon light was reflecting in the surface of the delta just when the picture was taken.... it would be nice if you post the picture to see it and have a better idea of what could it be. i'm just guessing here. !!

must be looking at an infra red photo where the hotter elements show up as reddish in color.
