Under performance, click on settings.
Near bottom of list, click on box "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" Save and close.

or

Go to Control Panel>System>Advanced, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the 'Use drop shadows for icon labels' on the desktop option, and click Ok.

Your "Drop shadows" are turned off.

Do this: Go to Start > Run > Type sysdm.cpl > OK > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Tick "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" > Ok.

Good luck.

Have you tried simply clicking anywhere with no icons on the desktop to DESELECT them ?

Maybe you just selected everything on your desktop?
