A regular CAT5 patch cable is used to connect machines to a router or switch. To connect directly between two machines without anything in between, you need a crossover cable.

Please if you re not sure of answer to a question in this forum please you don't need to answer it so as not to convince people here

The man want to connect to machine together, one running vista and the other running xp,

All you need to do is get a cross over cable to plug each end to each of the system, go to the tcp/ip settings to assigned them ip address and same subnet mask range.

that is, your laptop with the following config: ip address:192.168.0.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 and your desktop computer with 192.168.0.2 with same subnet mask.

Regards

To connect them, you wanna make them both part of a network. So get a router or a hub, and configure them both to be on the same network name such as HOME or MYHOME.

of direction, as long as they are linked to the comparable community you could connect them. in basic terms connect the XP gadget to the modem with the ethernet cable, and you will desire to have the skill to get right of entry to the different laptop from it, and vice versa.

It would be best if you purchased a Router first
