So there are 2 other women at my job that are pregnant and we are all very friendly with each other. We are also all Diet Coke addicts (self-diagnosed, of course!). We all know that soda is not something that you should drink much of at all during pregnancy. Well, the other day, one woman bought a can of Diet Coke and 3 glasses of ice and we were sitting in the cafeteria. We split the can three ways so what is that -- like 3 or 4 gulps per person. As we sat there with our salads and fruit and a completely healthy menu and bottles of water.

An older woman passed by and was appauled. She said that we are going to make our children unhealthy and that if we cannot even sacrifice our desires for 9 months then what kind of parents will we be. We all just sat there with our mouths open that she would have the audacity to say that. I am 9 1/2 weeks and that was my first soda--4 gulps.

Has anyone gone the entire 9 months and not given into one "bad" pleasure? (soda, salt, etc).

I have given up all of my guilty pleasures when it comes to unhealthy food and I just thought, I really doubt that I am going to scar my child for life because I take a few sips of soda. That happened last week and I am still pissed off about it (ok....so hormones are part of it but still!)

Have a great day!

Yeah alot of people have different thoughts on pregnancy- I know a girl that Still drinks Mountain Dew Regularly and she smokes her cigs still- Since she was going to quit but the doctor had told her that since she was a regular smoker that she's cause more stress on the baby if she stopped cold turkey then if she kept smoking- so she just smokes less- She had 1 baby that was born healthy and is almost 2 now and she is 33 weeks pregnant with a very healthy baby-
I guess some people can handle different things in their body when they are pregnant-
Im 6 weeks and I know I dont eat right but I sure try! I drink no caffeine, which is a killer for me! But we do what we can and hope for the best! Ill still drink a can of pop here and there I try not to make it a regular occasion!!

congrats on your lil one!

Some people don't understand the meaning of minding their own business. If she was truly worried, why didn't she take a different approach other than insulting you and your coworkers. I would take this as an insult, judging you as a parent. Lot of people forget about the "mistakes" made in the past and think of themselves as a parenting higher authority. If I were you, I wouldn't feel guilty at all, because 4 gulps of soda is nothing! I'm a regular Coke addict, stopped drinking it while pregnant and nursing; but indulged with a full glass once a week. Was my baby hurt by it? Not one bit! Keep eating nutritional meals as much as you can. Next time firmly and respectfully let her know that being a good mother is much more than a couple of drops of soda. Best of luck!

There is nothing at all wrong with drinking one pop... especially 1/3 of a coke. In all honesty, I drink a whole can of coke several days a week. It is perfectly safe to have 1 caffinated beverage. The problem is if that is all a person is drinking. No one goes an entire pregnancy without a "bad" pleasure... and trust me, drinking a coke is not a bad thing. It sounds like you are eating right and that alone is a good step... I have a hard time when I get hormonal giving up some of my comfort foods! Don't worry about bitter, know-it-all women and enjoy your pregnancy!!!

I didn't go through the entire 9 months without one "bad pleasure" its a fact of life, no one is perfect and sometimes you need to have a guilty pleasure to make it through the day. There was times that I would crave for a Sprite, sometimes it was to the point that it hurt I wanted it so bad. So I allowed myself to have a little and I was fine. And if you only 3-4 gulps, who cares?!?! Pregnancy is a hard thing, and sometimes you need to reward yourseld. Im sure even if you wanted to drink a FULL can of Diet Coke, your baby will be fine! Dont worry about what other people say I am POSITIVE you are going to make a great mother and your baby will be healthy!

Gawd, what makes these people come out of the woodwork?? That is SO insensitive, it isn't like you were 9 months pregnant and drunk as a skunk, it was a couple of sips of soda VERY watered down, by the sound of it, Sometimes its just the taste, isn't it? I never know what to say when stiff like that happens, but you will be hearing a lot of it between now and when the baby arrives. Until then, Congratulations from all of us here!

When you are pregnant, people suddenly become experts about pregnancy and you become the scum of the earth if you do something they don't agree with. Unfortunately, its a fact of life. At only 9.5 weeks, I'd of looked at the woman with a small tear in my eye and said, "Pregnant? I'm not pregnant! Are you calling me fat?!" That always shuts them up. lol

Everyone gives into "bad" pleasures while they are pregnant. Don't beat yourself up about it. Like you said, you had 4 gulps at most. Its not gonna hurt a thing. Besides, its recommended for you to limit your consumption of caffeine, not cut it out completely. Have a Diet Coke with your lunch if you want to. The baby will not be "unhealthy" because of it. When in doubt, just ask your doctor about it. And ignore other peoples silly unwanted 'advice'.

will everyone is different.
Will maybe the older woman was thinking of what she did while she is was pregnant with her kids.
Believe it not that health to drink soda because of the color and caffeine in it

I am pregnant myself. i drink the diet coke but caffeine free ones. But i do not drink a lot because of the sugar and stuff they put to make it diet.

So enjoy your pregnant. Everything for you would be different. Try to change the soda to caffeine free.

You should drink more water and drink juice.

Sugar is not good for either can lead to find out in the later pregnant of diabetes.(the test you have to take glucose test)

just do not have too much

That is some b.s. right there. Hell, I'm 34 weeks pregnant and I have had coke, pepsi, sweets, and you name it my entire pregnancy. I've been craving nothing but sweet stuff my whole pregnancy. Sure you're not supposed to have it, but you can't help it if you crave it every 5 seconds. I wouldn't worry about it though some people can just be so stupid. You all should have just told her off, and blame it on the hormones. lol I would have b/c that is ridiculous. Don't worry about it sweety, just some people are retarded.

haha... some people are so stupid.. it's not like you all were out on the smoking patio enjoying your cigarettes! =) I would have given that woman a piece of my mind. Anyway, you don't have to go the whole 9 months without soda, just switch to regular (not diet).. and limit yourself to a cup or so a day. You're doing just fine! You'll look back at that story and laugh =)

Well, at least you got your chance to vent here! lol!

Im sure you wont find too many more people like that woman! And even if you do, so what!

Ive had 5 kids, and no I didnt give up everything. I still ate peanut butter, seafood and processed meats and some other things ocassionally. I agree with abstaining from alcohol and smoking (and of course drugs) though, but yeh, a coupla sips of coke isnt going to do any harm!
