I'm referring to the 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI Ethernet card and comparing it to the speed of a USB port.

My friend just had high speed cable internet connected. The only connection they could use to connect the cable modem to the computer was an empty USB port.

I was told my friend should install a PCI Ethernet Card to plug the cable modem into because the ethernet card is much faster than a USB port.

What say you?

How can I determine the speed of his USB port? I don't know if he has a 1.1 or a 2.0 USB. Is there a way to determine the speed?

I know the 2.0 is 400Mbps but how can I see that on his computer? How fast is a 1.1 USB port? How can I see this on his computer?

His computer is a "Dell Dimension, model 4100" and was bought in 2000, but he upgraded from Millenium to Windows XP Home Edition.

Would you go to the expense and trouble to change it from USB 1.1 to Ethernet? One responder didn't seem to think it was worth the effort. Would like to know if I should change it or not. Thanks

Given age of machine, probably USB 1.1.
Whil a network interface is faster, unless you are taking an internet speed above 8mb you will be fine on USB1.1 (11mb/s)

I personally prefer network interface, but they are a little more work to configure.

I would suggest ethernet. Ethernet is designed for networking and should give the best conection. USB can slow down if you have a lot of USB devices running at the same time. This is probably unlikely to cause a problem though, The USB connection also tends to need extra drivers/software while ethernet doesn't need any extra

If the PC is from 2000, it is almostly certainly a USB 1.1. They have a very low transfer rate. Adding an Ethernet card would be faster then the USB 1.1 connection.

By the age of the computer it probably has USB 1.1 (up to 12mbps). You can find out what the computer has by running PC wizard 2007 (search for it on Google it is free to download and use). The network card is the best solution for this issue you gave your friend great advice.

You're correct..the Ethernet card is much faster then the USB connection. Get the Ethernet card, plug it in and connect the cable modem to it.

An Ethernet Card is faster. It is a direct cable in and the usb has to share resources.

USB 1.1 is 12Mbps

Ethernet can be 10 100 or 1000Mbps. Though I think the 1000 is pretty much the standard now. You gave your friend good advice.

the usb is slower, to determine the speed of your usb try to look on your motherboard's manual
