Difference in height = 6 m
Horizontal distance apart = x metres
tan 30° = 6 / x
x = 6 / tan 30°
x = 10 . 4 m

The heights of the two poles are 20 and 14 m . It means that the tall pole is 6m higher than the other. The two poles are connected by a wire and it makes 30 degrees with the horizontal So a triangle is formed with the wire as its hypotenuse, 6m as one of its sides and the horizontal to be found out. Now, in that triangle, tan30=1/root3=6/horizontal. Therefore, horizontal =6root3. Please draw a diagram of this problem while reading this answer. I hope you will understand it.

if D = 6m is the difference in height of the two poles and H is the horizontal, with a simple graph you will see that the wire, D and H form a rectangle triangle.
Therefore tan(30) = D/H or H = 6/tan(30degrees)

If I am understanding the question correctly:

There are two triangles: One with a 20m opposite and one with a 14m opposite.

To solve for the first triangle I got 14/tan(30) = x = 24.24

To solve for the second triangle I got 20/tan(30) = x' = 34.64

Then subtract 24.24 from 34.64 to get 10.39m

10.4 m closer to 10.392304 m

Triangle will have sides of 6 and 10.4 and a hypotenuse of 12

sin of 30 = 1/2

pythagorean theorem 6^2 + 10.392304^2 = 12^2

let's see 36 + 108 = 144

I used sine...
sine30 = 20 / x
put sine30 over 1 and cross multiply...
20 = xsine30
find the sine of 30...
20 = x(0.5)
divide them both by 0.5...
40 = x

The answer is 40!!!
But that's by my diagram... the link is sourced below.

Hope that helps!!
