Overdrive is meant to be used on the Highway. It essentially adds another gear, causing your engine to run at lower RPM's. This will result in better fuel economy. Some people say it's best to leave it off during stop and go traffic, other say it's fine to leave it on. Here is a good wiki with alot of stuff on it regarding just this thing.

I think some of the people here have it backwards. The overdrive button in cars is used to cut out fourth gear from the automatic transmission. Fourth gear is only available at speeds over 45 MPH, and sometimes you need to shift out of fourth and back into third because you're going up a hill or hauling a heavy load. The overdrive button gives you some flexibility in situations like this because engines tend to "bog down" when climbing hills or hauling heavy loads and the transmission doesn't always shift out of fourth gear when it really should. For a passenger car like a Camry, however, you shouldn't ever need it unless you're driving in the mountains, so it's better to leave it alone. You'll get better gas mileage by not using overdrive.

the tranny is already in overdrive until you push the button . overdrive is the final gear in your transmission to help keep your fuel mileage up and engine work low. if you take your car off overdrive your engine will work harder unless you live in an mountainous area or towing with your vehicles you don't ever need to touch the Overdrive Off button

It puts your transmission in overdrive mode. This is good when you are cruising on the highway. You will get better gas mileage. Overdrive makes your engine work less. Next time you are on the highway at cruising speed press the overdrive and you will see your RPMs drop.

Overdrive will keep the car in a higher gear so it will conserve gas and not waste it. If your car is running in a lower gear, the heads have to pump faster and to do that, it will burn more gas.

Keep your overdrive on, it will save you money,

Holy crapola! You got the ECXT model, didn't you?
I didn't know they still made this model. Listen. Program a date into the on-dash display screen, whatever date you want. Then get your car up to 88 mph and push that button!!
Wahlah, you're now in the day and year you programed in. Good luck, my friend.
