Its none of the governments business if someone is married. This is not a religion issue because the government can't force a religion or prevent a religion from marrying anyone. It is not a morality issue since gays will have sex weather they are married or not. It is simply about social benefits like tax breaks, survivor benefits. The same benifits that all single people are denied gay or straight. Instead of fighting for gay marriage why dont gay people join with all single people to fight the discrimination that All single people suffer.

It has nothing to do with God. Marriage validates people in a human way. Plus they claim that there are over 1000 MORE benefits to being married than being in a gay union. Gays feel like 2nd class citizens not being able to marry. And if it makes them happy then by all means it should be legal and apparently the Supreme Court feels the same way. Plus it will be interesting to see if the GAY marriages last longer than the 50% divorce rate in the hetero marriages. But since most of the gays who are getting married now have been together for 25 years or more they already have a head start on it. If they made the straight people have a 25 year engagement it might make the marriages last longer! :-) Peace ... Gay Marriage Efficionados

No. You need to think about this a little more. The government marries people, it issues marriage certificates. You can go to city hall and be married in a purely secular ceremony, provided you have a partner of the opposite sex. You can send in your marriage license which was signed by a minister, and the state will issue a marriage certificate, provided you have a partner of the opposite sex.

Some gays want the legal benefits that come with marriage, not the single life. That's what they're fighting for.

By definition, marriage is the social institution under which a MAN AND WOMAN establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc. I believe a better alternative would be for homosexuals to create their own version of marriage just for them and their lifestyle and call it something else. This way, the true meaning and definition of marriage is not mocked, degraded, or changed. This could settle the whole debate.

as you say marriage is primarily an economic institution, however, it is, and always has been a secular/government institution as well.

the government also has an agenda. the nuclear family benefits the government in many ways; a father/mother/child unit is likely going to be a stable and settled one, a unit which will include productive and diligent citizens. also, the government wishes to encourage the rearing of children to add to the future worker base and economy. traditional "families" have lower rates of criminal activity, have a greater tendency to buy and own property, and generate more tax revenue.

you see, economy and government are oftentimes synonymous...

"I'm a man. A MAN'S man" –

Marriage is social institution.

Besides, if being married makes me a woman’s man (at least my wife sure seems to think so), then doesn’t being a man’s man make you …?

Well, I think some gay couples would like to be treated as hetero couples. Marriage is a legal contract when considered by the state, so, I suppose as such, gay couples should have identical rights.

They don't miss the point, the point of Gay Marriage isn't about marriage, it's about PREFERRED treatment for gays. They want affirmative action type guidlines, but they can't demand that right now, they have to whittle away at conventional traditions. Marriage is just a tool for them to get to that objective.

Hippa laws allow a sick gay person to have their "life partner" have access. Companies allow them to name a "life partner" on their benefits, yet they still want the institution of marriage to be included in their "rights". As far as I can tell marriage isn't a right for anyone, but they want it to be stated as so.

Gay rights is a smokescreen for Gay Privelege. That's why gays often liken their plight to the Civil Rights movement, which gives minorities special priveleges. They want those privleges too.

Agreed. Marriage is a religious thing, not a government one. You can not force any religion to accept a gay relationship as a marriage.

I agree. I am not gay. But I could careless whether or not two people of the same sex get married...So why not? It doesn't hurt me in anyway, doesn't effect my life. And if makes them happy, I am all for it.
