Well, OK, if you work, what's the downside of their checking with your employer?
Your option would probably be to pay a semester's rent up front. Students don't have the best reputation for being great tenants, so it's not unusual for landlords to make special rules for students. Unfortunately, this catches the resposible people as well as the irresponsible ones.

Stop telling prospective landlords you are a student.
When you are just a regular guy looking to rent an apartment they will likely run your credit and verify your employment/income all to make sure you make enough money to pay the rent and don't have a history of "skipping" out on the rent. As long as you make enough money to pay the rent and don't have a history of broken leases you should be fine to get an apartment
When you are a student the landlord doesn't want to bother running your credit because you likely don't have any and they already believe that you will "skip" out on the rent given the opportunity. Therefore they require a cosigner. It is not illegal for them to do so either.
The only other option that may work is for you to offer a much larger deposit. The idea is that the more you have vested upfront the less likely you will screw the landlord. Still, it is at the discretion of the landlord/management company.

1) Visit early - some choice residences are leased months in advance. So Apply Early!! (don't wait) - 2) There will be a place on the application that asks about "other income" - you can put your aunt's information there - if you have not build up a credit history, she might be asked to consign (no big deal). 3) After you fill out the application and it gets approved by the apartment, you are ready to move in- Rent a truck and have fun! Please make sure to spend just a very little money to get renters insurance - Nothing ruins possessions more than water damage from a neighbor.

Unfortunately for u , being a student in a renters market is a stigma for proven reasons.
suggest u find out about on campus housing, find an other student who has a flat and co exist if possible, buy a cheap van and survive the semester while saving lots of cash for the next year rental.
a deposit of six month or twelve months will make getting a flat much easier.
u won't need anything big - u'll be studying and working so a place to sleep and shower would be enough. u'll eat out any how.

Their going to ask you for employment verification. Without employment, you will need a cosigner. They can legally verify an employer.
It's not to punish you, but legally, if they rent you an apartment while you have no income, they are actually commiting a state law violation as most states prevent renting to someone with no income. Now, if you have income, that's different. You can count income from an employer, or other sources, and do not need a cosignor.
The aparment does not have to let you rent in most cases if you have steady verifiable entitlements and or income.

im not sure what ur problem is? these people need to verify you can afford the rent by either checking with ur employment on ur salary. or they would have to have a cosigner. a cosigner would be someone who can verify your assets and if u failt o pay they would be responsible. no legitimate company will rent to you without this. its standard. i think if u want to avoid this then go to a private renter but be prepared for them to do illegal things, etc.

You could also try and make a concession as a negotiating tactic; larger security deposit, offer maintenance services, recruit others to live in the same complex, etc.

Try written references and a higher deposit. Put together a good resume, and if you have high grade scores, show them that also. It's all about presentation.
