Is there life after death?
First of all let's be clear what is meant by death. In the normal stages of death the heart stops beating and respiration ceases. Without a supply of oxygen the bodies various organs stop functioning and start to die. The brain, also starved of oxygen begins to shut down. Death occurs when the brain ceases to register activity.
So if that's all we are, then to answer the question 'is there life after death', the answer would have to be no. The real question then is, is that all we are?
Those of a religious nature would argue that we are far more than that, they would argue that we have a soul. A soul is, for me, hard to imagine.

All straight forward stuff.
So the difference between being alive and being dead is activity in the brain. We are our brain. What is the very essence of us, what makes me me and you you, is our brain. So what is it?
The human brain is a collection of cells that for the typical adult weighs about 3 lbs. It contains 100 billion neurons. The neurons form connections to each other called synapses. These synapses produce chemicals called neurotransmitters. There are 1,000,000,000,000,000 synapses in the brain. A neuron is activated and the synapses connects to another neuron via a neurotransmitter through its synapses. Every thought you have, every movement you take, every memory you possess, is nothing more than a particular sequence of synapses. This is what we are, a collection of neurons sparking off a chain reaction to other neurons. When the brain is no longer activating neurons, we cease to exist.
The rest of our body serves no other purpose than to keep the brain alive and to reproduce.
So if that's all we are, then to answer the question 'is there life after death', the answer would have to be no. The real question then is, is that all we are?
Those of a religious nature would argue that we are far more than that, they would argue that we have a soul. A soul is, for me, hard to imagine. How do you describe it? It is not something that we can detect, it is a spiritual thing without any physical substance, and it is this that supposedly lives on after our mortal bodies have died. So where is the soul while we are alive? I assume it must reside in the brain as that is where we reside. I can only assume again that when the brain dies the soul is released. That being the case the soul is able to survive without the need of a body, it is obviously independent of the body. So why does it need a body in the first place? Perhaps it needs a body to develop and is unable to leave it until the body dies. See Our final destiny, immortals?
According to popular belief only human beings possess a soul, animals apparently do not. So what is the difference between humans and animals? As far as I can tell it's just a question of intelligence, as measured by us. After all it's not that long ago that we were animals, we weren't created human, we just evolved along different lines than the others. That being the case there is nothing special about us that should warrant us having a soul and animals not, after all, some people are born with severe brain malfunctions that on an intelligence scale would rate them less than some animals. So intelligence can not be the deciding factor, unless you believe that you need to score above a certain IQ level in order to be granted a soul. If we tinker around with genetics and produce a chimp with the IQ of a schoolboy, would that give it a soul? Would the chimp go to heaven?
So what exactly could it be that determines whether or not a life form merits a soul or not, as the case may be? I think we can rule out intelligence. What else sets us apart from the animals? Some would say our appreciation of the arts, poetry, music, etc. I don't agree. I think that just comes with intelligence. What else is there? Absolutely nothing at all! We think we have a soul, we think we are 'superior' to the animals, we think there is some undefinable quality about us that sets as apart from the animals. Hogwash! We are just animals that got smart.
Assuming for the sake of argument that we do possess a soul, then the obvious question is where does it go when we die? I know what your thinking, it goes to heaven. So what and where is heaven? Obviously it isn't a 'real' place up in the sky somewhere, it is a spiritual place, it has to be if the soul can go there and we can't. What does it do when it gets there? is it the end of our journey, or the beginning? This is more to do with a belief in God.
cheers :)

Hi,
God is a concept that gives us some moral support when we r down and is that keeps us from being arrogant when we r up. There is no person who has seen god except some who r victims of their own halluccination or by some other selfish people.
The so called gods/godmen created concepts like heaven n death in order to keep people on the right track and alluring them of the heavenly comforts which they get if they dont take the fleshy pleasures and acts that r against society. Here comes the concept of soul.
A computer(Robot) works so well as long as the whole circuit etc. are functioning properly, once there is some problem, it doesnt function. Similar to this is Human body. If soul is there and leaves us after we die, in case of death due to seperation of body parts, each seperated part has its movement for different time intervals. So does this mean EACH OF OUR BODY PIECE HAS DIFFERENT SOUL?

There is life after a physical death. There is no life after the second death. Some people will die once and others will die twice. God gave you guys free will. Be wise and choose right. The only way to have that life after death is through Jesus Christ. If you choose yourself, you will lose yourself forever.

Yes
I asked the same question to one my teachers
he said so "when a person is put to hypnotism we can trace down the memories of his life up to the age of 3 years but when he is further forced to hypnotism the person will reveal about his past life. this happened in UK when a scientist forced his client the person started speaking Japanese language"
Under this scientific proof we must agree there is past life
Apart from this it is a false beleif that we humans alone have soul. every living thig posses soul and we do not enter into other circles of soul. Our souls are human and will remain human.
If man is brain as many do feel then the above research shows the deepest memories of our brain,
And heaven, it is time spent bw two lifes so as to equate our karmic debts that all!!
There is no end for our souls - it leaves this body and passes to other. Some ppl have show this when they are alive only

Since the real YOU never dies--only this fleshly vehicle called a body--then, yes there is life after death. Kinda like moving on to a new place/going home, etc.

i am among the 1.9 billion Christians who believe in an everlasting life after death. After her brother, Lazarus's death, Martha told Jesus, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."
Jesus said: "I am the Resurrection, and the Life." (John 11, 24-25.
The life on earth is only a preparation for that eternal life we hope for.

Answer: Yes there is life after death
When we live, there are 3 bodies we posses.
1. Sthoola Shareeram - Physical Body
2. Sookshma Shareeram - Spiritual Body
3. Kaarana Shareeram - Causal Body
When you die out of the above, 1st Physical Body and 3rd one Causal Body dies.
Spiritual body contains 5 components
1. Heart [Spiritual Heart]
2. Buddhi [Intellect / RAM]
3. Chittam [Data Storage / Memory / Hardisk]
4. Ahankar [That which executes the commands of Buddhi]
5. Gnyan [Wisdom and Knowledge]
Out of the above Buddi leaves out the Collected information in the memory. But it carries its intelligence.

it all depends upon the thinking of a person. for a optimist there is life after death, b'cos for him life never finishes nd his aims never end. similar way it is just opposite wit pessimist
it is always good to feel dat their is life after death, since it dat feeling will get u going the entire life in a much smoother way, nd since life after death can never be proved it simply makes the point easier

For the Abrahamic faiths, (and indeed most of the world's religions) yes.
It seems unlikely that any after-life will be in corporeal form in the way we understand life in our world (though many faiths claim exactly that).
Empirically, we can not know, as we do not yet understand our own consciousness, our place in the universe, or anything beyond the universe we can observe. We know that consciousness inhabits and functions in a living brain, but we do not know for sure that it emerges only from a living brain. Our physical world, the one we experience in place, time, matter and observable change is but one of many possible planes of existence. We do not know that our universe does not intersect with one beyond our understanding. We do not know that our 'selves' can only exist in this one.
