My DVD drive (Samsung) does not appear under My Computer and i am unable to read any kind of disks.
But when tried to boot from one of my live cds of linux, it was working and i successfully booted to the system. And after such a boot i am able to view and read from disks. But after the next restart it is the same thing happening. I tried connecting my IDE cable properly. it didnt help. Help Me PLEASE. (OS: windows Xp professional sp2)

Go into the Control Panel and the Administrative Tools icon. There will be a Computer Management icon under that.

In the Computer management, look near the bottom left for the Disk Management section

Open that and see if you DVD drive is listed. If so, right click on it and you should be able to assign it a letter.

Make sure you check the Master/Slave relationship if this DVD drive shares the same cable as a Hard Drive. Both can not be Master. To change the DVD to a Slave, you have to reposition a jumper pin on the back of th unit by the IDE cable

Check the jumper settings. Try setting to Master or Cable Select.

you need to be administrator to do the following.
right click my computer in the desktop > manage >
go to divice manager in the left tab you will notice something like DVD/CD-R drive> you have to enable this drive
if this is not working

right click my computer in the desktop > manage >
go to disk management in the left tab on the rigt buttom your 'DVD/CD 0' drive with Drive letter (like D:) right click on that (dvd\cd 0) change drive letter and change the drive letter.
