I'll assume you don't have anything in the tank that could have caused such a wound... like a crayfish or something similar. That is a pretty nasty infection that has caused a bad ulcer on your fish but it looks like if you act quickly, the fish will heal. I suggest you treat the fish with Maracyn or Maracyn TC. Other options would include generic brands of the same drugs Erythromycin (Maracyn) and Tetracycline (Maracyn TC). Use either one as directed on the package and it should stop the ulcer from getting worse.
This will tank quite some time to heal, probably 2 months or more. During that time your fish will be at risk for fungus infections or additional bacterial infections, so I would suggest you have medications for those problems handy in case they appear. Keepoing the tank very clean and water changed often will help prevent that possibility.

It looks to me as if he's injured himself. Melafix doesn't do anything and is a waste of money. Good clean water and fresh food and he should heal on his own. You can add a little salt to the tank. One teaspoon to one tablespoon per gallon, and leave in this solution for a week or two. I'd raise the temp to 84 degrees to kill any invading bacteria. Anti biotic food wouldn't hurt either. Medi gold from www.goldfishconnection.com works like a dream.

First, do a partial (twenty to thirty) percent water change. Add one tablespoon of non-iodized (plain or Kosher) salt for every five gallons of water, being careful not to pour any directly onto your fish. Let the salt sit at full strength for at least twenty-four hours before doing another partial water change. Also, switching to a high-quality food like Pro-Gold, or a medicated food like Medi-Gold, could really help. Like the other respondent said, you can find them at http://www.goldfishconnection.com .

it looks like an ulcer which can be caused by an injury which has got worse or by your pH levels, check your nitrite and ammonia levels first if high do a large water change to reduce this,
put some salt in the tank ,from your aquatic shop and buy the medication for treating ulcers and add it to the tank
you need to keep checking your levels in your tank daily until the wound has healed

Do you have other fish? It looks like a wound from maybe fighting or possibly, is there a parasite of some sort in your tank? (baby lampreys?)
Your fish has the possibility of dying so don't be surprised if that is what happens, fish don't have too good of a defensive system when it comes to injuries.

Looks like White Spot [Gold fish cancer] You can get some treatment for it but it's not 100%. Make sure if you have any other fish to keep them seperate from that one.
