I like mixed metaphors - they make me laugh. Often spoken by those who have heard words and phrases, but not necessarily familiar with how to use them properly.
A mixed metaphor is one that leaps, in the course of a figure, to a second identification inconsistent with the first one. Example: "He stepped up to the plate and grabbed the bull by the horns," where two commonly used metaphors are confused to create a nonsensical image.

Years ago, in 1966. to be exact, I was at the University of Virginia. I characterized the US's education system--which lacked scientific method training in categories of thoughts--then as "the empty carousel".
The image is of young children being forced onto this mechanical contraption, seated on wooden horses and being carried around in circles for years and years. Then they stagger off, dizzy, havingh wasted all that time, and no more able to define or evaluate than when they began
their sentence.
I use the metaphor it speeches still, against the anti-educational Estalishment's tsaristic nonsense that sets a gatekeeper-dictator over every field of thought and endeavor in this country--with the powers of an infallible king's petty inquisitor--and leaves the rights of every child and every ciizen behind. So long as there is no cognitive trining--no sufficient education can take place.
So the empty carousel grinds on, and on...

I like metaphors that involve the ocean.
A sea of troubles.
Surfing the net.
An ocean of information.
A whale of a tale.
Sea of life.
The novel The Old Man and the Sea is one of the best examples I know that uses the ocean in a metaphoric way. Hemingway uses the ocean to represent his own personal view of life.
