I smoke about a pack of full flavored cigarettes a day, and I would like to quit smoking here soon. Notice I am not fully comitted yet to doing so; ) Anyway I was wondering if anyone had any ideas that helped them quit smoking? Iwould like any and all advice on this subject. The only people I DON'T want to hear from, and with all due respect, is the people that have never smoked cigarettes, because you can't understand the addiction, and I don't need someone talking down to me. I am 24 years old and I started when I was about 13. I did it to "be cool" Anyway I regret it and would like to stop. Any advice, ideas, and/or suggestions no matter how bizarre, I would like to hear them. Thank You

You're smokin' full flavors now, a pack a day. That's just like I was and you started like I started, though a few years earlier.

Here's whatcha do...
First off, switch to Lights instead of Full Flavors. This will suck initially but believe me it won't matter soon and this switch is good preperation for switching off. Even if you end up smoking more, switch to Lights.

Second, after you're OK with Lights, change habits. Don't chain smoke, extend time between cigarrettes, and most importantly, mix up the times when you do smoke. Example: I always lit up when I got in my car. I changed that to wait until I got home. I smoked every break at work. I changed that to not smoking the first and third breaks.

Third, severely reduce the number of cigarrettes per day. You do this by leaving your cigarrettes in one place at home. You don't smoke unless you're where they are and if you have a day off, don't just get up and smoke, get up, eat, watch TV, rock-out to some music, then maybe smoke ONE Light cigarrette. Don't smoke again until after lunch but keep occupied so you don't feel the time go by.

Fourth, reduce to one cigarrette per day. It will be easier by then because your routine is gone and the habits are broken.

In addition to all of this, it helps to have a quitting buddy (someone to call when you're about to give in) and a really good reason to quit. Think about what you can buy with that $5 or so a day you're not spending now. Think about how much longer you'll live and in better condition.

I am a smoker of 17 years. I also started to be "cool". I don't feel so cool anymore. I feel like an outsider.

Anyhow I have some ideas but I haven't really tried it out for I want to quit yet I enjoy smoking even though I know the risks.

I am going to mention one risk for you are a smoker and you know if not all most of them.

Peradontil (unsure of spelling) disease. This is where the teeth will become weak and fall out. Lack of flossing will cause this but smoking speeds up the process.

Ok now some ideas I have not tested...

Find something you enjoy doing to keep your hands busy such as forming pottery, coloring, painting. Do anything you can think of to keep busy.

Watchout for triggers such as drinking and smoking or coffee and smoking, driving and smoking. I could give you a million triggers that I have.

My Step Mom used chantex to quit smoking. It worked for her but it is not an easy road. She took her medicine, chewed on straws and would ask me for smokes. I refused to give her any. I would tell her sorry I don't have any on me. She knew I was not being truthful, but was gratful later. My point here is I hope you have friends who can do the same for you instead of being an enabler.

Chantex blocks the receptors that the nicotine locks into. It is not by any means a magic pill. You will have to work at it.
My step mom has stoped the behavior part of smoker but she still needs nicotine. She doesn't smoke but she does chew on the nicotine gum.

I think sometimes stopping the behavior and then the addiction is the way to go.

Think about... After dinner do we really crave a smoke or do we just enjoy having one after dinner. Driving down the road do we really crave it or do we just get bored.

Ofcourse cravings are there if we wait long enough.
Anyhow, since you have been smoking quite some time try stopping the behavior but still get your nicotine fix. (such as nicotine gum.)

Chantex is only given for a certain amount of time and then your done. Afterwards if you feel like you just have to have a cig. go get the gum.

Your doctor should be able to help you with a plan.

Myself I guess I need to work on will power. I feel I am under control of the nicotine. As far as will power I don't have a clue how to get myself back in control.

All I know is my son was upset because I wouldn't go on a school trip on the bus because I knew I couldn't smoke.

I also couldn't take home some silly little ginnipig becasue the teacher wouldn't let it live in a smokers house.

My little boy hurts everytime when I choose addiction over him because he doesn't understand.

(you may want to keep that in mind for your children or future children.)

Good luck to you! I know how bad this addiction can be.
I know it can be done because even though I haven't given it a serious try others have and suceeded.

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

There are a lot of hospitals throughout the US that have programs that are free - sponsored by the tobacco companies to help you stop smoking. The basic program starts you with your total cigarettes and you cut out one every day or two. I think that they use nicorette to help the cravings and a medication to help with the depression that comes from the depenency of smoking. The program lasts a few months and is very successful. Everything is furnished.

Ok i know you said "you dont like answers from ppl who dont smoke" i might be able to help just follow these 3 steps

1.) pray (if your not saved you need to be) ask the lord to help you. You aint got nothing to lose think about it.

2.) buy some gum and chew on it instead of smoking all along

3.) like one of the answers up there ^ go to a hospital or a doctor see what can really help.

You have to really want to quit and do it because YOU want to stop...not because others think you should. Pick a date on the calender perhaps 2-3 weeks away. Be concious of when you're smoking...write down the time..cut back everyday of how often you're smoking and how many you're smoking.
Keep yourself busy. ....join something to keep you distracted. When getting a craving....don't reach for "food" to comfort you...go for a walk, or work out for a bit. Drink plenty of water....and reach for HEALTHY food when eating.
It's mind over matter mostly...You have to self talk to yourself remembering WHY you want to quit and stick to that goal. You can do this~* ...but YOU have to want it bad enough. No one said it will be easy....and since you've smoked for many years...looking into being hypmotized may be worth considering.
I'm wanting to quit and have just gotten to that point, so will be starting My Plan of action...picking my Quit Date*...

Good Luck To You*(and to me lol) Keep on smilin*
...Remember........You CAN Do This* (mind over matter) :)

There are so many ways to quit smoking. Gum, the patch, oral medications, hypnosis...you just have to decide when you're READY to quit. If you're not ready, it won't happen. You have to really want to quit for it to work. So it depends on your lifestyle - if you don't like chemicals, try hypnosis. I would talk to your doctor when you're ready, and he/she will be able to steer you in the right direction.
Good luck - it's not easy!

I'm glad that you mentioned the" talking down", because that is a pressure, and a distraction that will cause the need to re-set the goal. A runner on the race track needs time to slow down after they crossed the finish line, well, for a smoker, the finish line is the start line and they need time to slow down.

Stop buying the cigarettes, chew gum through the day and don't think about it.

Its going to be a little rough, but its going to work.
