I would start with what sounds like the most fun to you. WoW is pretty forgiving. If you start with a Warrior and decide you'd like to try a Warlock, go for it.
What's most fun is certainly going to vary from person to person. I enjoy my hunter because she levels very quickly and with my pet I've always got a built in group. I also like my priest, but I like to help people out. Perhaps you want to be up in the face of the mob and a Warrior is right for you.
Take a few characters up to about level 10. It doesn't take too long to get there. At that point you'll have a pretty good idea how each character plays and stick with the one that you like the most. Keep the other characters as alts because sometimes your mood changes and you'll want to play something different.
The main thing is have fun. Find what's fun for you and do it.

All classes are equally fun depending on your taste but if you wana hav a very good class pick a hunter or a paladin ..and sadly yes horde is allot better than alliance most of the time because they are more organized..on most servers and battle groups any ways...you should pick a normal server if you don't want to deal w/ players of an opposing faction ..on a pvp server if you are a low level alliance high lvl horde will be able to kill you in contested and horde territory and they will do it allot just for fun ..same thing if you pick alliance..so a normal server will make playing easier for you although i personally find pvp servers more fun..also pick a sever w/ a medium or high population..a server w/ a low population will have very few people and it will be harder to find groups and a full server will be to crowded

That is really a hard question to answer, since you haven't said what you like to do. Here are some genearlties of ach class and what they end up being good at.
Warrior: Tanks, they take one for the team
Rouge: DPS, they do little amounts of damage every second
Hunter: Ranged attackers with combat pets
Mage: Do large amounts damage every few seconds
Warlock: A magic using cross between Rouges and Hunters
Priest: Heal other chracters and make the more powerful
Paladin: Warrior/priest hybrid
Shaman: Warrior/Mage hybrid
Druid: A jack-of-all trades, but master of none
In Wow you can quest, craft objects, compete in player versus player combat, explore the game world, chat with people and kill monsters.

I recommend playing all classes up to lv10, or going to wow.com and looking at the talent calculator to see the different speccs of the classes. If you just wanna level really fast I recommend playing a hunter. Your pet tanks for you while you stand there and shoot. Or shadowpriest lv really fast. Do not play a warrior for your first character because they are really gear dependent and you will have large repair bills later on. Mages also lv fast, they make their own food/water and do very high damage. Feral druids level decently, rogues level fast, etc etc.Warlocks are very strong and extremely versatile, can solo mobs other classes need groups for. Later on you can kill 8-9 mobs at once in the same time it takes another class to kill 1-2. All classes are fun and its really up to you. You'll have fun either way. If you dont have a set realm you want to play on I play on Blackwing Lair. I have many alts including a 70 lock, 62 hunter. Just go to the blackwinglair forums and ask for me:wrathatakis. Or email me, I can answer any questions you may have.

I wouldn't buy it. Why should you have to pay every month to play a game you have bought. Also the way it is built if you don't want to get slaughtered you have to buy every expansion pack to keep current with weapons etc. Try Guildwars. Graphically superior, much more playable and once you have bought it there is no subscription fee. There are over 1000000 players and you don't have to buy anything you don't want to. You can buy one game and play it by itself but trade things from other players that don't appear in your game. Or you can buy the others and take your character through into your new purchase. Or create a new character. Start with Guildwars:Prophecies. It's only £20, if you don't like it not much lost, if you do it's a bargain. Better than spending £30+ on WoW and then paying for 3 months before you decide you don't like it or don't have enough time to play making it not worth paying a subscription.

When you create your character, little ! boxes with appear at the bottom of the screen, with help and tips to get you started. You will just start off doing basic quests, killing etc... oonce you gt the feel of the game, you can get a profession (mining, blacksmithing, leatherworking etc..) and if you join a good guild they may have fun activities and games for you to participate in.
your 'what sort of character is more fun' question is really up to you, just play with a few different types of character until you decide on the one you enjoy the most. Personally, I prefer druids :)

lol, to the guy who says alliance sucks, im on alliance, and i have alot of mature friends. they might be young, but we are actually mature. cause age is no guage for maturity. alliance may be full of 12 year olds. the horde is just full of 12 year olds who laugh at the alliance because of the said reason above. its all up to you. i personally play a rogue, which is pretty fun. i usually play assasins or thiefs in games anyways.
i have played a lil on a warlock, and they are pretty fun too, once they get tehre pets and stuff.

dont be alliance for heavens sake be horde they are alot more older and balenced, you should go kor gall realm and be a undead (rated my fave race) blood elves do look nice a sharp but alot of the time rated as weak crappy gays or cant fight
i suggest as a starter class shaman or hunter because its easier to lvl them but if you are going for a challenge warrior or paladin to lvl
some races are better at other classes for instance be a orc warrior or tauren warrior there racials are so much better
but whatever you choose dont be alliance they really are noobish
oh yes and keep of that guild wars, runescape and everquest and silkroad---> they suck really..
its worth the money WOW trust me
lol monkeyfun or whatever... a rogue huh? ^^ jeez lol :X
