You might try a detergent meant for delicate things, such as Woolite. It's very good for silks, lingerie, etc., so hopefully a teddy bear will come out just fine, too :-)

Put your bear inside the leg of an old pair of pantyhose and then put him in the washer with a detergent meant for gentle wash. Use the gentle cycle. This will minimize scuffing.

Don't use the dryer.

I have always washed my children's teddy bears on the delicate cycle using liquid Ivory Snow. They come out beautifully.
