Howcome when a nun covers herself from head to toe, she is respected for devoting herself to her religion but when a muslim woman does it she is looked at as opressed?

i think this perception exists because it often seems as if the muslim woman is serving her husband, while the nun is serving god. i think the reports about muslim women needing chaperones, not getting educations, and having to submit to their husband's whims plays a part in this idea. the cases of muslim women that are on the media are often the most exaggerated representations. this is found among other cultures.

during hurricane katrina, there were newspaper articles depicting a black man and a white man both swimming through flood waters to get food from an abandoned grocery store. the black man was described as "looting" while the white man was described as "finding food". depictions like this create ideas and stereotypes in people's minds, which are hard to combat without conscious effort.

here is a link to the looting vs finding article if you are interested: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/09/01/191113.php

A nun has renounced social life and is dedicated to her god. I personally think it is an awful waste, but in a free world, everyone should be allowed to do what they wish, as long as it does not infringe on others. Why muslim women are looked at as oppressed is due to ignorance - people know very little of the real life of muslim women. What gets the media attention is always the extreme, bizarre, and therefore, negative images are perpetuated. Having said that, a lot of muslim women ARE oppressed. But then, so are a lot of European ones. It is important for each one of us to stop making judgements based on what the media feed us with and try for a little understanding - that way, we may help all of us who need help.

No one is portrayed equally in the media. If you are concerned about the respect the Catholic nuns get? Then think on this, I was raised Catholic and they were for the most part...derided and feared, that is not indicative of respect. We called them penguins.
The media has no respect for anyone these days. Nuns included.

Its just a double standard. Also we cant say we are in Iraq because of oil, we are of course there to liberate the wimmin and to do that they need to be opressed in the first place.

A nun does it voluntarily and is not forced to do and punished for not doing so.
