I have a Dynomarklawn mower. Everytime I start the lawnmower the flywheel key breaks in half into two pieces. The engine will "turnover" but won't run. I think it is backfireing a little.

I had that happen to a 14HP briggs once - it would cough and sputer, then it was really hard to turn over. After checking the flywheel key, i noticed it snapped. It got irratating after the 4th time. Id say something inside is going on - i was told by a lawntractor repair guy it was' hydraulicing' - or cant compress a liquid/oil and snapped the key. I think it was more then that, they just never told me( i bot the used motor from him and it didnt run until i took it back and they 'fixed' it - supposedly it was a 'checked over' motor ). Id check the combustion chamber for any liquid, see if the valves are moving ( with the plug out rotate the motor). It might be something off internally , somethings causing the crank to stop and snap the flywheel key.

The flywheel nut has to be torqued to 65-70 foot pounds. This is not always easy to do by yourself. I have put a pipe wrench on the lower portion of the crankshaft, under the tractor, and was able to get the nut tight. If you use an impact wrench be sure to check the torque setting before you use it. Put a new key in and torque the nut and you will be good to go.

The flywheel nut *MUST* be very tight! Possably you are not getting it enough. try using an air impact wrench.

Timing may be off, causing the cylinder to fire at the wrong time.
