Check with your local elementary school and ask about aide positions and tutoring programs. If you enjoy working with younger children, check with your local Head Start program and preschool agencies. Most Head Start and Preschool agencies are always looking for subs. Also ask about volunteering some time in the classroom. You could be a "guest reader" or share a hobby with the children, teach them to cook something, or just go and play. If you are looking for volunteer work, consider the Big Sister/Big Brother programs. Check with your local social service agencies to see what other programs might be available in your area.

I applaud your desire to work with children. These are tomorrow's adults and they need to be nurtured and encouraged to grow!

If you go to your local Department of Human Services there is a volunteer center where you can be a mentor for kids or a tutor for children that are having problems in school. You would be suprised at how many kids need mentors and they dont have enough people that volunteer. I am a youth mentor for kids that are on probation and refferred to the DHS. Its very rewarding, plus there are alot of things to do. If you dont know where the DHS is you just type in volunteer services in (your city) on google and something will come up. Good luck.

Lots of Title I schools (schools with kids from low SES) need reading and math tutors. Most run after-school programs.

A school nearby might have a need for a student monitor, parapro, or something to that effect. It'll get you in working with kids. Not exactly teaching in front of the room, but they are still learning from you!

Contacting social services, Boys/Girls clubs, and other volunteer organizations, can hook you up with mentoring opportunities. There's lots of kids out there without the support they need.
