My eyes would! Sadness and happiness are both intense feelings and only one's eyes would not belie one's true feelings. You may be smiling or frowning but your eyes could say otherwise. Trust the eyes.
Okay, if the eyes are not acceptable (coz it's part of one's face), then I'd go for body language. If I'm happy, I feel giddy and my whole body seems to tingle with good vibrations. Sad, then I become "tiklop" (folded) like I'm neither here or there.

Personally, my friends automatically know that I am happy when I am humming to myself. It can be any random tune, sometimes to the degree of idleness of "Itsy Bitsy Spider", but when I hum or sing with apparently no reason, it's usually because I'm happy about something.
Other people clearly display their emotions through their gestures. Some kinda skip while walking, some have cheerful voices, lots of different symptoms can easily give away a person's cheerful mood.

If I'm sad, I usually mumble to myself lines of sad poems, sometimes in Spanish, so that my friends turn around and lookit me, knowin' I don't speak the language.
If I'm happy I sing my Spanish tune of Mi Ultimo Adios, in a really powerful voice, that my next door neighbor at home, looks out the window, to see if there's fire.

I guess we can get hints from the way the person walks, or the way the person is dressed. And the overall aura of a person. These things you can see even if the person is not looking at you, and even if you are just observing the person from a distance.
Or maybe I will ask Madam Auring.

If I am happy I'm in the talking mode .... when I am sad (even I make a fake smile) I am very silent.

well i agree with it's me again but also if you're having a conversation and the person usually plays a part of it and they're just silent and if you ask of n e idea they can contribute they'd be brief, to the point and that's it so you can tell by different things while observing: everyone has different symptoms!

by how you speak, tone and the actual words. If you go, "how was your day," and the person goes "great!" enthusiastically, then they are happy probably.
If a person says they have had better, then they probably aren't so happy.
The optimist versus pessimist response.

By looking at my posture - one would know I'm happy if I'm standing erect and at full attention.
