More correctly, I believe, would be oil described as "liquid gold".
Purely because of it's value.
Oil is used as the basis for many of our processes and manufactured products (plastics etc), as well as fuel, lubrication, heating, etc., etc.
Many wars (and battles within major wars) of recent times can be traced to the quest for oil.

Liquid gold is actually any type of crude or refined oil really. The reason people call oil this is because its a liquid and it is almost as valuable as gold. Our entire society runs on the use of oil and without it, cars wouldn't run and so on and so forth.
For a long time, gold has been something of an "object of value" in our life. When someone says gold, they think wealth and money. Oil and petroleum are now considered as important and needed as gold. (sorta)

Oil is used in our daily lives if it vanishes then it will affect the environment because intsead of oil people will use wood as fuel.So it is precious for all.
